WWOOF x Adventure Club
Adventures of Wild-Tending a Native Food Forest
Hello, StagPathers! Coming up on Thursday, May 14th, Adventure Club is having a special crossover with WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). WWOOF volunteers help sustainable growers like me get the help needed to do more, connect with others, and spread the word of sustainable practices.
I’ve had a lot of people over the years ask if I host WWOOFers (volunteers), which confused me the first few times. For one, I am not truly a farm. I live on a retired horse ranch (no horses), and while I am wild-tending a food forest, I have never sold goods at a farmer’s market or to a grocery store and have no organic farming certificates. But it turns out, none of that matters to WWOOF. All that matters is that I am approaching land management with sustainability in mind. So when I was recently asked again if I host WWOOF volunteers, I signed up!
Not all WWOOFing experiences will be the same. A visit to a flower farm in Alaska or a tropical fruits farm in Hawaii will provide different experiences than my wild-tended food forest in Ohio. Some hosts allow volunteers to live alongside them for months on end, helping out with farm chores in exchange for valuable wisdom along with food and shelter. For me, I am currently offering half-day opportunities.
WWOOF volunteers typically work anywhere from 2 to 8 hours a day and share a meal with the host. My volunteers come out for half-day, so we have one meal with snacks inbetween.
Are you interested in learning more about WWOOFing or Adventure Club? If you’d like to join us, please sign up for Adventure Club orrr register as a WWOOF volunteer (there is a yearly subscription fee). If you register as a WWOOF volunteer, just be sure to contact me to let me know if you’re interested in joining us on the 14th. You will have the opportunity to meet two WWOOF volunteers. :)
